After years of silence, The Magic School Bus is officially back on the road.
According to Variety, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s franchise has landed a major creative force behind the camera, with Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman set to write and direct the film. Elizabeth Banks remains attached to star as the iconic teacher Ms. Frizzle, a role she was first announced for back in 2020.
The project is being produced by Legendary Entertainment, Scholastic Entertainment, and Banks’ own Brownstone Productions, signaling that development is finally gaining real momentum after several years without major updates.
For generations of fans, The Magic School Bus has been one of the most beloved educational franchises ever created. Beginning as a book series by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, the property exploded in popularity thanks to the animated PBS series that aired from 1994 to 1997, with Lily Tomlin voicing the endlessly energetic Ms. Frizzle.
The series followed Ms. Frizzle and her students as they embarked on extraordinary field trips aboard a magical yellow school bus capable of transforming into nearly anything imaginable. From journeys through outer space to explorations inside the human body, the franchise blended science and adventure in a way that captivated millions of young viewers.

The addition of Rob Letterman is especially noteworthy. The filmmaker previously directed Detective Pikachu, a film praised for successfully bringing a beloved animated property into live action while preserving its charm and sense of wonder.
Banks has remained attached to the project since her casting announcement in 2020 and will also serve as a producer. The actress and filmmaker is best known for films such as Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games, and Cocaine Bear.
