Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that The Matrix 5 is still in active development, giving fans their biggest update yet on the future of one of science fiction’s most iconic franchises. The confirmation came during the studio’s latest earnings presentation, where the project was listed among its major upcoming theatrical releases, although it is not expected to arrive before 2028.
The next installment will be written and directed by Drew Goddard, best known for The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Bad Times at the El Royale. Goddard previously revealed earlier this year that he was still deep into the writing process, saying he was in his “writing cave” as development continued.
Unlike The Matrix Resurrections, the fifth film will not be directed by Lana Wachowski, though she remains attached as an executive producer. It will mark the first time a Matrix film is helmed by someone outside the Wachowski family.

One of the biggest unanswered questions is whether Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Neo and Trinity. Warner Bros. has not announced any casting, and neither actor has officially signed on. With Resurrectionsleaving the door open for future stories, fans continue to speculate whether the franchise will continue the existing timeline or introduce an entirely new generation inside the Matrix.
The Matrix remains one of Warner Bros.’ most influential franchises, redefining action filmmaking with its groundbreaking visual effects and philosophical storytelling when the original film debuted in 1999. While The Matrix Resurrections divided audiences and underperformed at the box office, the studio clearly believes there is still life left in the digital world that changed cinema forever.
