Chris Evans is officially back as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, but his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be anything but a happy homecoming.
During an appearance at Fan Expo Boston, Evans opened up about reuniting with directors Joe and Anthony Russo for the upcoming Avengers film and teased that Steve is going to be put through the wringer once again.

Evans joked while discussing his return.
According to Evans, however, the punishment awaiting Steve goes well beyond another round of superhero battles. The actor described his storyline in Avengers: Doomsday as “brutal” and said the film will dig deeper into the qualities that have defined Steve throughout his MCU journey.
Evans called the story “a really good examination into his nature and his values,” suggesting the former Captain America could face a deeply personal challenge when he returns.
That description has immediately raised questions about Steve’s family.
Marvel confirmed Evans’ return in the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser, which showed Steve arriving home before eventually holding a baby. The reveal seemingly established that Steve built the life he wanted after traveling back in time at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
Of course, introducing Steve’s child immediately gives Doctor Doom something considerably more personal to threaten.
There is currently no confirmation that anything happens to Steve’s child in Doomsday, but Evans describing the story as “brutal” is unlikely to calm fans who have already been speculating about why Marvel specifically chose to establish Steve as a father ahead of the battle with Doom.
Steve’s family could also provide Marvel with a way to challenge the character without simply repeating what audiences have already seen. Steve Rogers has fought aliens, lost friends, watched half the universe disappear and sacrificed the life he knew to save it. Threatening the peaceful existence he finally earned after Endgame could test him in an entirely different way.

It also makes Evans’ return feel increasingly important to the larger story.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo previously explained that bringing Evans and Robert Downey Jr. back required finding a story worthy of continuing what came before. Joe Russo has said both actors have integral roles in the story the filmmakers developed, with Downey returning to the MCU as Victor von Doom rather than Tony Stark.
Whatever Marvel has planned, it appears Steve Rogers is not returning simply for a nostalgic cameo.
Evans’ comments suggest Avengers: Doomsday intends to challenge the character on a fundamental level, and after Marvel deliberately showed audiences that Steve finally has something resembling a normal life, the word “brutal” suddenly carries a lot more weight.
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
