“The day after I graduated from high school, I found out that a movie that I had auditioned for, an independent film that was shooting in New Zealand, that I got the part. And that to get there, I was gonna have a 24 hour stopover in Los Angeles,” Anne Hathaway said. “I think that I should go on as many auditions as I can while I’m on the ground. And hey, did they ever cast that princess movie?”
The audition happened during a 24-hour stopover in Los Angeles, right after she graduated high school and got cast in the New Zealand indie. She called the manager she’d had for about a year: “I think that I should go on as many auditions as I can while I’m on the ground. And hey, did they ever cast that princess movie?”
The manager’s answer: “Ooh, no, they haven’t cast the princess movie. And actually they’re seeing girls on that day, hold on, okay, just got you an appointment. You’re gonna go to the Falcon Theater and meet Gary Marshall and you’re going to audition for the Princess of Tribeca,” which is what “The Princess Diaries” was called at the time.
“I auditioned, got on the plane, landed in New Zealand, found out that I was, wanted me to screen test. I couldn’t go, but I still got the part,” Hathaway said. “I found out while I was in New Zealand that I was gonna be Mia Thermopolis.”
