Star Wars is heading back to theaters for its 50th anniversary, and this time fans will be able to experience the film in a way they never have before.
Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that the original 1977 Star Wars, later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, will be released in IMAX for the first time when it returns to theaters on February 19, 2027. Select theaters will also screen the film in IMAX 70mm.
The theatrical return is part of Lucasfilm’s yearlong celebration marking 50 years since George Lucas introduced audiences to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Darth Vader and a galaxy far, far away.
While the original film was shown in traditional 70mm during its initial theatrical run, it has never received an IMAX release. That makes the upcoming anniversary engagement the first opportunity to see the 1977 classic presented in the format.
Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope
The celebration won’t stop there.
Lucasfilm also confirmed that Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming film directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, will receive an IMAX 70mm release when it arrives in theaters on May 28, 2027.
That date comes almost exactly 50 years after the original Star Wars opened in theaters in May 1977.
Star Wars: Starfighter stars Gosling alongside Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and Flynn Gray. Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay, with Levy and Kathleen Kennedy producing.
The original Star Wars returns to theaters February 19, 2027, with IMAX 70mm screenings available at select locations.
