Resident Evil’s New Official Trailer Unleashes a Brutal New Nightmare

Sony Pictures has released the new official trailer for Resident Evil, giving fans their best look yet at director Zach Cregger’s terrifying new take on the legendary survival horror franchise. Rather than retelling familiar stories from the games, the film introduces an original protagonist and a fresh nightmare set within the Resident Evil universe.

The trailer follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier whose routine delivery turns into a desperate fight for survival after a horrifying outbreak throws everything into chaos. Filled with terrifying infected creatures, gruesome practical effects, and relentless tension, the footage leans heavily into horror while capturing the dread that made the Resident Evil games iconic.

Cregger, who previously directed Barbarian and Weapons, has described the film as a reinvention rather than a remake. Instead of focusing on familiar characters like Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine, the movie tells a standalone story designed to exist alongside the events of the games without rewriting their established lore.

The film stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, with a screenplay by Zach Cregger and Shay Hatten. Sony Pictures and Constantin Film are bringing the latest cinematic adaptation of Capcom’s legendary franchise to theaters on September 18, 2026.

Based on the trailer, Resident Evil looks far more interested in creating relentless suspense than delivering nonstop action. The atmosphere is dark, the infected are genuinely unsettling, and the focus on an ordinary man trying to survive could make this one of the franchise’s most grounded and terrifying adaptations yet.
