The first full trailer for “Verity” dropped today, and it sells the Colleen Hoover adaptation as a gothic psychological thriller, not a romance. Anne Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, a bestselling novelist left unable to walk or talk after an accident. Dakota Johnson is Lowen Ashleigh, the struggling writer her husband hires to finish her book series.
Josh Hartnett plays the husband, Jeremy. Lowen moves into the Crawfords’ remote house, finds what looks like Verity’s unfinished autobiography on a flash drive, and starts reading confessions about the family that she can’t unread. “A writer’s words should be honest and bloody and a little bit terrifying,” Verity says in voiceover. Then: “I was his drug, and he was mine.” Then: “This is your final warning, only darkness ahead.”
Michael Showalter directed. Nick Antosca wrote the screenplay. Hoover produced alongside Hathaway, Stacey Sher, Jordana Mollick, and others, with Alex Cooper appearing as herself in a podcast cameo.
The 2018 novel is a BookTok phenomenon and one of Hoover’s most divisive titles, with readers split for years over whether Verity’s manuscript is a confession or a writing exercise. Early trailer reactions lean optimistic on the cast and the oppressive house, with book readers calling the atmosphere a step up from the page.
“Verity” opens in theaters October 2.
