Fans have unexpectedly gotten their best look yet at Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but it certainly wasn’t the way Sony Pictures intended.
Approximately four minutes of unfinished footage from the highly anticipated third and final installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy leaked online Friday and quickly began circulating across social media. The footage appears to be material previously shown behind closed doors during Sony’s CinemaCon presentation earlier this year.
The leaked footage reportedly includes an extended sequence picking up after the cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with Miles Morales still trapped on Earth-42 and confronting the alternate version of himself who became the Prowler. The footage then transitions into a trailer-style montage featuring additional action and characters from across the Spider-Verse.
While fans have been excited to finally see more from the film, Christopher Miller, who co-wrote and produces Beyond the Spider-Verse, isn’t happy about how the footage made its way online.
“Not a fan of leaks of unfinished, not fully rendered footage,”
Miller wrote on social media following the leak.
His comments also make clear that what is circulating online isn’t representative of the finished animation audiences will see when the movie arrives in theaters.
Sony has reportedly been working to remove copies of the footage from social media as they continue to spread across multiple platforms. The studio has not yet released the footage officially.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will conclude the story that began with 2018’s Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and continued with 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse. Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompsonare directing the finale, with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and David Callaham writing the screenplay.
The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 18, 2027.
