“I have bipolar. I just learned how to live with it and I just have made it my friend,” Selena Gomez says of the shift after four treatment centers. “That’s not 6 years. That’s probably 10 years in reality.”
Gomez has been to four treatment centers, and she says none of them cured her, because there was nothing to cure. On Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, she said the real change came from accepting that the disorder wouldn’t disappear and figuring out what she could actually control.

“I have bipolar. I just learned how to live with it and I just have made it my friend,” she said. She stays on medication she believes in “wholeheartedly,” goes to therapy, and manages the low days by adjusting small things: what she watches, the music she listens to, when she’ll let friends talk her into a scary movie.

She put the real timeline at closer to 10 years than the six she’d once cited. She also said she rewatched her own documentary and didn’t recognize the girl talking about her body and her image in 2016, and that it broke her heart to remember feeling that way.

Now she’s clear about what she isn’t. “I don’t want people to ever look at me and think she has it all and she’s figured it out,” she said. “Every day is practice.”
