One of America’s most recognizable restaurant chains is getting the Hollywood treatment.
Hooters: The Movie is officially in development, with a feature film set to tell the unlikely true story behind the creation of the famous chicken wing restaurant and how a simple idea eventually became a nationwide brand.
The movie will center on Ted and Lenny, two lifelong friends from a small Iowa town whose road trip to Florida ultimately puts them on the path toward launching a restaurant empire.
According to the film’s official description, Ted becomes fascinated with a woman named Diane after spotting her in a spring break commercial. Determined to meet her, he convinces his reluctant friend Lenny to travel with him to Clearwater Beach, Florida.
What begins as a road trip eventually leads the pair toward the creation of Hooters.
The story won’t simply focus on the restaurant’s rise, however. The film is also expected to explore the challenges that followed as the rapidly growing company found itself facing pressure from the federal government.
The movie is inspired by the real history of Hooters, which opened its first restaurant in Clearwater in 1983. The original restaurant was founded by six businessmen, several of whom had connections to Iowa. In fact, the Clearwater restaurant featured memorabilia from Waverly, Iowa, where some of the founders grew up.
The group famously had little confidence that the concept would actually work. Hooters was incorporated on April Fools’ Day in 1983, reportedly because the founders believed the business might fail. Instead, the restaurant became a massive cultural phenomenon and eventually expanded across the United States and internationally.
Hooters: The Movie arrives at an interesting time for the company. The restaurant chain has undergone major changes in recent years, including financial struggles, restaurant closures and a restructuring of the business.
Now, more than four decades after the first Hooters opened its doors, Hollywood is preparing to tell the story of how it all started.
Casting, production dates and a release date for Hooters: The Movie have not yet been announced.
