The Haunted Airplane Crash of Flight 401 in Florida 1972

Few ghost stories in American aviation have become as famous as the alleged haunting of Eastern Air Lines Flight 401. The story began with one of America’s most tragic aviation accidents and eventually developed into a remarkable legend involving apparitions, unexplained warnings, mysterious appearances aboard other aircraft, and the claim that portions of the crashed airplane somehow carried the spirits of two dead crew members into the skies.

The two men at the center of the legend were Captain Robert “Bob” Loft and Second Officer and Flight Engineer Donald “Don” Repo. According to the stories, their deaths did not end their association with Eastern Air Lines. Instead, they supposedly began appearing aboard other Eastern L-1011 Tri Stars —sometimes looking so realistic that people initially believed they were living members of the crew.
