Avengers: Doomsday Director Says the MCU Is Going Back to “Phase Zero”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe may be preparing for its biggest reset yet.

During a recent appearance at SXSW London, Joe Russo, who is directing Avengers: Doomsday alongside his brother Anthony Russo, revealed that Marvel is taking the franchise back to what he called “Phase Zero.” According to Russo, the goal is to create a fresh starting point for audiences, regardless of how many MCU projects they’ve seen before.

“We are back to phase zero,” Russo said. “This is starting over from scratch.”

The comments have sparked plenty of discussion among Marvel fans, especially considering that Avengers: Doomsdaywill be the 39th film in the MCU. Despite the franchise’s extensive history, the Russo Brothers appear determined to make the upcoming blockbuster accessible to both longtime fans and newcomers.

The film is expected to bring together heroes from across the Marvel multiverse, including members of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. At the center of the story will be Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., in one of the most surprising casting moves in MCU history.

Marvel has faced criticism in recent years for producing an increasingly interconnected universe that some viewers felt was difficult to keep up with. The “Phase Zero” approach suggests Marvel is looking to simplify its storytelling and create a new jumping-on point as the Multiverse Saga heads toward its conclusion.

Whether this reset is exactly what the MCU needs remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Marvel is positioning Avengers: Doomsday as more than just another sequel. The studio appears to be treating it as the foundation for the next era of superhero storytelling.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
