The long-awaited Call of Duty movie has finally revealed which corner of the blockbuster video game franchise it will adapt, and it appears Activision and Paramount are aiming for one of the series’ most iconic storylines.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming live-action film will take place within the Modern Warfareuniverse rather than the futuristic Black Ops timeline or the franchise’s World War II roots. The decision gives filmmakers access to some of the series’ most recognizable characters and conflicts, including fan-favorites like Captain John Price, Soap MacTavish, Ghost, and Task Force 141.
Director Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon) is attached to helm the adaptation, while Taylor Sheridan(Sicario, Yellowstone, Hell or High Water) is co-writing the screenplay. The pair are also producing the film, bringing together two filmmakers with extensive experience crafting grounded military action.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare
While story details remain under wraps, reports indicate the film won’t simply recreate the events of a specific game. Instead, it is expected to tell an original story inspired by the tone, characters, and military realism that have made the Modern Warfare subseries one of gaming’s most successful franchises.
The Call of Duty franchise has sold more than 500 million copies worldwide, making it one of the highest-selling video game series of all time. After years of failed attempts to bring the property to the big screen, this latest adaptation marks Activision’s biggest cinematic push yet.
The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2028, joining a growing wave of successful video game adaptations following projects like The Last of Us, Fallout, and A Minecraft Movie.
