Responding to fan speculation online, Gunn shut down rumors that the project had changed directions, explaining that the concept has always involved both characters.
“It didn’t become anything. It is what it’s always been, including pitching it as part of the package before I even started at DC.”
Gunn later doubled down on the concept, writing:
“It’s both a Jimmy Olsen AND a Gorilla Grodd show. And it’s one of my favorite projects. We start filming soon.”
The statement is the clearest indication yet of what fans can expect from the mysterious HBO series. Earlier reports suggested the show would be a true-crime style documentary series hosted by Jimmy Olsen, with Gorilla Grodd serving as the focus of its first season. However, Gunn recently clarified that the rumored title “DC Crime” was never actually in development.

The project marks another major expansion of the new DC Universe being overseen by Gunn and Peter Safran. Following the breakout popularity of Skyler Gisondo’s portrayal of Jimmy Olsen in Superman, the character is now poised to lead his own series while sharing the spotlight with one of DC’s most iconic and bizarre villains.
For longtime comic fans, Gorilla Grodd is far more than a giant gorilla. The character is a super-intelligent telepath who has long been one of The Flash’s greatest enemies, possessing immense strength and psychic powers that make him one of the DC Universe’s most dangerous villains.
Production on the series is expected to begin this year, with Gunn describing it as one of his favorite projects currently in development.
