Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and now his 417-foot superyacht Koru is docked in Australia’s tropical Croc Country, with a crew member saying it is waiting for “the boss.”
The $500 million yacht has been moored in Trinity Inlet in Cairns, Far North Queensland, since at least August 19, towering over the surrounding marinas against a backdrop of lush, rainforest-covered mountains.
“We are hanging around for a few days to stock and refuel whilst waiting for the boss, and then we will be heading out,” a staff member associated with the vessel said.
The comment raises the possibility that Bezos and his new wife could soon arrive in the region before Koru heads back out to sea.
Cairns is the gateway to Australia’s tropical north, sitting just south of Port Douglas and the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest. The “Croc Country” nickname is not just marketing: the surrounding rivers, mangroves and coastal waterways are home to saltwater crocodiles, the world’s largest living reptiles and the region’s apex predators.
They also come remarkably close to the city. From a small pier dwarfed by Koru, a local operator takes tourists through Trinity Inlet on jet skis to search for wild crocodiles. Salties have reportedly been spotted within roughly 500 metres of the yacht’s mooring.
Koru is a custom three-masted sailing yacht built by Oceanco in the Netherlands. Launched in August 2022 and delivered in April 2023, it is often ranked as the largest true sailing yacht in the world. It can accommodate 18 guests across nine staterooms and carries a crew of roughly 36 to 40.
The yacht is shadowed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel equipped with its own helipad and hangar.
Mounted on Koru’s prow is a polished wooden figurehead depicting a long-haired woman in a flowing gown. Around her neck is the Māori koru spiral, an unfurling fern frond symbolizing new beginnings that gives the yacht its name.
When Koru first appeared publicly in 2023, outlets including People and The New York Times noted the figurehead’s resemblance to Sánchez. She dismissed the theory in a November 2023 interview with Vogue.
“I’m very flattered, but it’s not [me],” she said.
According to Sánchez, the figure is Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, fertility, war and gold, and one of Bezos’s favorite mythological figures. She then gestured to indicate a larger bust and joked: “If it was me…”
