Power Rangers Live Action Series No Longer Moving Forward at Disney+

Power Rangers Live Action Series No Longer Moving Forward at Disney+

The planned live action Power Rangers reboot has hit another major setback, as Disney+ has reportedly decided not to move forward with the series.

According to Deadline, the project had been in development at Disney+ with Percy Jackson and the Olympians executive producers and showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz attached to write, executive produce and serve as showrunners. Hasbro Entertainment and 20th Television were also involved.

The decision reportedly comes down primarily to budget concerns rather than creative issues. A large scale live action superhero series would require a significant investment from Disney, while the company does not actually own the Power Rangers intellectual property. The franchise remains owned by Hasbro.

The news marks another frustrating chapter in Hasbro’s attempts to bring Power Rangers back to television with a major live action reboot.

Before the Disney+ project took shape, Hasbro had been developing a different Power Rangers universe with Netflix. That version had Jonathan Entwistle overseeing the franchise and Jenny Klein involved as showrunner, but Netflix ultimately abandoned the project in 2024. Hasbro subsequently began searching for a new creative direction and streaming partner.

Power Rangers

Disney+ emerged as the franchise’s next potential home in 2025, with Steinberg and Shotz taking over development of a new version. The pair appeared to be a natural fit after their success with Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but the new Power Rangers series will now apparently end before reaching production.

Power Rangers remains one of the most recognizable children’s action franchises in the world. Beginning with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1993, the property went on to span 30 television seasons along with movies, video games, comics and decades of merchandise.

The most recent television installment, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, debuted on Netflix in 2023 and served as the conclusion to the continuity that began with the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

For now, it is unclear what Hasbro’s next move will be or whether the company will seek another studio or streaming partner for a future reboot. After failed attempts at both Netflix and Disney+, however, fans may once again have a longer wait ahead of them before a new generation of Rangers finally makes its live action debut.
