Young women’s contribution to the war effort?
In online culture, Ukraine has long had a popular association with pornography.
The Soviet collapse and the economic hard times led many Ukrainian women into international adult films, and later to webcam work and platforms like OnlyFans.
The country has consistently ranked in Pornhub’s top 20 for traffic – around 15th–16th in recent years.
But, unlike in most of Europe, to produce, distribute, or possess pornography in Ukraine is illegal.
It is actually punishable by up to seven years in prison.
But that didn’t stop the country from hosting a vast porn industry operating under the protection of corrupt cops.

Wall Street Journal reported:
“Ukrainian authorities are now demanding taxes from people who work in the porn industry. But anyone who complies is effectively confirming their involvement in criminal activity.
‘These women either don’t pay taxes and face criminal charges for that, or they pay taxes and get charged with violating pornography laws’, said Yaroslav Zhelezniak, an opposition lawmaker who chairs the finance committee in Ukraine’s Parliament. ‘It’s a tragicomic situation’.”

So, Ukrainian MPs are pushing to legalize porn to fight against corruption and raise up to $25 million a year in taxes.
“It might be a drop in the ocean for a country fighting a war of survival that says it needs $120 billion a year for its defense needs. But the sum that Zhelezniak predicts would be enough to pay for 30,000 drones.
A bill co-authored by Zhelezniak is awaiting its second reading in Parliament after winning a first vote in July.”

Cyber News reported:
“The adult industry is already generating millions of dollars as it stands in Ukraine, despite it currently being illegal.
According to research by Fenix International, the parent company of adult content site OnlyFans, almost 8,000 Ukrainian content creators earned over $130 million in 2023.
Now, the government is mulling to tax this revenue in order to collect more money for Ukraine’s defense and close this legal loophole.”
