Zack Snyder is heading to Manhattan’s deadliest prison.
According to Deadline, Snyder has officially signed on to direct a reimagining of John Carpenter’s cult classic Escape From New York for StudioCanal. The project marks the latest attempt to revive the beloved dystopian action franchise, which has spent years in development under various studios and filmmakers.
While plot details remain under wraps, the report notes that Snyder’s film is being described as a reimagining rather than a direct remake. No casting announcements have been made, and it is currently unknown whether the story will follow the original film closely or take the franchise in a new direction.
Snyder is best known for directing 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and Netflix’s Rebel Moon films.
A Sci-Fi Classic
Released in 1981, Escape From New York was directed by John Carpenter and starred Kurt Russell as the iconic antihero Snake Plissken. Set in the then-future year of 1997, the film imagined Manhattan Island as a massive maximum-security prison where criminals were abandoned and left to survive on their own. When the President of the United States is captured inside the city, Plissken is forced into a dangerous rescue mission with the promise of a pardon if he succeeds.
The film became a cult favorite and helped cement Russell’s status as an action star. Snake Plissken would later return in 1996’s Escape From L.A., once again directed by Carpenter.

A Long Road Back To New York
Hollywood has attempted to reboot Escape From New York for years, with several directors and creative teams attached at different points. Most recently, StudioCanal announced plans to move forward with a new version of the property after acquiring the rights.
Now, with Snyder at the helm, fans may finally see Snake Plissken return to the big screen.
As of now, no release date has been announced.
