In modern times the most vibrant, colorful, brilliant, prominent and global celebration of our collective Sacred Feminine principle occurs every December 12th during the annual Festival and Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe – also known as the Mother of Americas. She is a Universal Symbol of the Divine MOTHER, and her appearance served to heal a cultural rift between the indigenous Aztec culture of Tonantzin and the Spanish traditions connected with Mother Mary.
According to tradition, the dancing Virgin appeared to a Nahua man named Juan Diego in December 1531 on Tepeyac Hill, north of Mexico City, where there was a shrine dedicated to the earth fertility deity Tonantzin. Out of the dry desert sands SHE miraculously brought forth red Castilian Roses, and Her ritual movements unequivocally signaled to the Mexican natives that it was still their collective “Sacred Mother.” Even though numerous religious differences had created a tremendous amount of conflict at the hands of the conquering foreigners… this SIGN allowed a conduit to be created through which the Motherhood of God could be honored by simply a different name. For more than just Mexicans, she is the most beautiful, most internationally revered of all Marianfigures.
The Virgin of Guadalupe/La Virgen Morena/Mestiza Madonna (Brown Virgin) iconography symbolizes Unity as the Supreme Earth Mother came to blend both the Nahautl and Catholic elements to create a powerful representation of the Goddess HERSELF across multiple civilizations. Her tilma’s stars and celestial imagery connect her to the heavens, while the sun and moon evoke Aztec symbolism of divine earth power. The lovely dark ribbon encircling her waist indicates her pregnancy, embodying hope and new beginnings for the transformation of life. Her hybrid image representsthe fusion of European and Mesoamerican faiths, reconciling diverse communities under a shared spiritual figure.
Rich in ancestral veneration, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe has become a beloved national symbol of the entire Mexican nation, and She is viewed by many to be a special protector of Native American peoples. Every morning before sunrise on the 12th of December one can find hundreds of dancers gathering all around the world, many in feathered headdresses and indigenous-style costume, dancing vigorously to drumbeats in churches, parades, plazas and halls as a form of devotion. Especially since the numerological alignments of 12/12/12, the joyous phenomenon of Her holy processions encapsulates what’s been called the Guadalupe Code. The astounding outpouring of thousands of flowers, music, ethnic food, magnificently decorated shrines, ornate altars, elaborate services, ceremonies and growing collection of both religious and tribal artwork worldwide; is a clear affirmation of our Rising Feminine Divine. To recognize the adoration of Her Blessings is to see the deep shamanic bond that humanity has with their Mystical Mother of Roses.
