More than 30 years after The Mask became one of the defining comedies of the 1990s, fans are still hoping to see Jim Carrey slip back into the iconic yellow suit one more time.
While there was a follow-up film, Son of the Mask, released in 2005, it featured neither Carrey nor original director Chuck Russell. The sequel was widely criticized by fans and failed to recapture the magic of the 1994 original, leaving many to wonder if a proper continuation could someday happen.
Now, Russell has offered a hopeful update.
While speaking to ComicBook, the filmmaker was asked whether there could ever be a sequel to The Mask that reunites him with Carrey. His response suggests the door is still open.
“There’s always talk about it,” Russell said. “A sequel to The Mask is always something I’m asked about. It’d be lovely to return, but for me with Jim in particular, it would be lovely to return, but we’ll see. It’s not ready yet, but that’s a lovely idea.”
The comments may not confirm a sequel is in development, but they do show that Russell remains interested in revisiting the franchise that helped launch one of Hollywood’s most memorable comedy characters.
Released in 1994, The Mask starred Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, a timid bank clerk whose life changes forever after discovering a magical mask that transforms him into a wild, reality-bending trickster. Directed by Russell, the film was a massive success, grossing more than $350 million worldwide and becoming one of the most beloved comedies of its era.
Carrey has also softened his stance on returning to past roles in recent years. After reprising Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog films, the actor previously stated that he would be open to returning as The Mask if the right creative vision came along, saying he would consider it if presented with the “right idea” and a filmmaker with a strong vision.
For now, there is no official The Mask 2 in development. But with both Russell and Carrey expressing openness to revisiting the character under the right circumstances, fans may have more reason than ever to believe Stanley Ipkiss could someday make his long-awaited return.
