The film that gave a generation midnight margaritas and “I put a spell on you” finally has a sequel, and the original witches came back to launch it.
“Practical Magic 2” held its premiere at the ODEON Luxe in London’s Leicester Square, with Bullock and Kidman returning as producers alongside their old roles.
Bullock, 62, wore a strapless Givenchy leopard-print jacquard gown with a corseted bodice, a large bow drape, and a thigh-high slit, finished with Jessica McCormack jewels and black strappy heels. Kidman went custom Chanel in an icy aquamarine sequined gown draped with pearls and chain, also slit to the thigh, with gold accessories. The two posed holding hands on a dark blue carpet dressed with tree-stump candle installations and greenery.
Joey King wore a sheer yellow custom Miu Miu dress scattered with delicate floral appliqués, paired with L’Dezen jewelry. Maisie Williams went in a structured deep burgundy look.
Set about 25 years after the first film, the story follows Sally’s eldest daughter Kylie as she starts uncovering hidden family secrets and developing powers she can’t control. King plays Kylie, with Williams as her younger sister Antonia. The Owens women travel from Massachusetts to the UK to face the origins of their magic and try to break the curse that dooms any man they love.
Susanne Bier directed, working from Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel “The Book of Magic.” Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also return as the eccentric aunts. It was Bullock’s first major premiere in several years, months after she spoke publicly for the first time about losing her partner Bryan Randall to ALS in 2023.
The film opens in US theaters the weekend after Labor Day, roughly 28 years after the original.
