Documents Reveal Mitt Romney’s Brother Sought to Block Estranged Wife from Divorce Settlement Before Her Tragic Death

VALENCIA, Calif. — Just four months before his estranged wife tragically fell to her death from a California parking garage, Mitt Romney’s brother filed for divorce—and attempted to prevent her from receiving any settlement, court documents reveal.

George Scott Romney, 81, initiated the divorce against 64-year-old Carrie Elizabeth Romney in June, citing “irreconcilable differences,” according to papers obtained by The Post.

A veteran litigator and former political candidate, Romney sought to “terminate the court’s ability to award support” to either party, indicating he wanted to ensure the courts would not grant his wife any assets.

Mitt Romney’s brother, George Scott Romney, filed for divorce just four months before his estranged wife tragically fell to her death.

Court documents from the divorce, filed by Romney’s attorney, indicated that both parties had initially agreed to “mediate property and support.”

Carrie Romney, however, countered with her own filings, requesting alimony and that Romney cover her legal fees. She also asked to have her name legally restored to her former surname, Dimas.

The case was still unresolved when Carrie’s body was discovered at the base of a parking garage Friday night in Valencia, roughly 35 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Authorities are investigating whether her fall was accidental or intentional. The LA County medical examiner had listed her cause of death as “deferred” as of Tuesday evening. Police do not suspect foul play.

While it remains unclear whether Carrie fell or jumped, her body was discovered Friday night at the base of a parking garage in Valencia.

The couple had been married just over eight years before splitting in May, with George Scott Romney filing for divorce the following month, according to court records.

Although they had been dating since 2012, Romney’s filing claimed the couple shared no property for the court to divide. Yet they had apparently lived together at a $725,000 Valencia condo, where neighbors said Carrie had been staying shortly before her death.

“She was quiet. Very nice,” a neighbor who asked to remain anonymous told The Post.

Romney was also seen walking in the neighborhood on Tuesday, his hood pulled up against a rare, dreary Southern California rain.

Carrie’s financial situation amid the pending divorce remained unclear, though her past included a 2001 Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing with a previous husband.

The divorce would have been Romney’s third. While the couple had no children together, both have grown children from previous marriages — including Romney’s daughter, Ronna McDaniel, who formerly served as chair of the Republican National Committee.

Romney is the older brother of Mitt Romney, the former U.S. senator from Utah who ran against President Barack Obama on the Republican ticket in 2012.

He is also the son and namesake of Michigan governor and Nixon cabinet member George W. Romney.

A longtime corporate lawyer in Michigan, Romney once harbored political ambitions of his own, though none came to fruition. He sought the Republican nomination for Michigan attorney general in 1998 but was defeated, and in 2013 he considered a run for a Michigan Senate seat, according to Michigan Public Radio.

Romney also read the Michigan roll call at the 2012 Republican National Convention, when his younger brother, Mitt Romney, secured the party’s presidential nomination.

He could not be reached for comment regarding his wife, but Mitt Romney issued a heartfelt statement.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” the former senator told People. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
