Hugh Jackman Isn’t Ready to Pass the Wolverine Claws Just Yet

Hugh Jackman doesn’t appear to be thinking about retirement from the role of Wolverine anytime soon.

With Marvel Studios moving toward its long-awaited X-Men reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars, fans have begun wondering when the iconic mutant will be recast. However, Jackman suggested there’s no rush to hand the claws over to someone else.

Speaking to PBS, the actor joked about how much longer he plans to play the fan-favorite hero.

“I’m 57. I’m doing it till I’m 90. So, you know… I’ll do a little time capsule for them.”

The comment comes after Jackman’s celebrated return as Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine, which became one of Marvel’s biggest box office successes. Although the actor previously believed 2017’s Logan would be his final outing, his return alongside Ryan Reynolds has reignited speculation that Wolverine will continue appearing in future MCU films, including the rumored Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Eventually, someone will inherit the role, but Jackman made it clear he has no intention of telling the next Wolverine how to approach the character.

“I’m not going to say anything to whoever plays him, ’cause no one said anything to me, which I really am thrilled about. And I had not read the comics, so I was just coming to it fresh. And I learned a lot over the years.”

Instead, Jackman believes any future actor should make Wolverine entirely their own.

“Of course I’ve got my own take, but it must be melding in with me in some way. I hope someone just comes in and does whatever the f*** they want and makes it their own.”

Those comments suggest Jackman isn’t concerned with preserving a specific version of Logan for future actors. Instead, he hopes the next Wolverine will be given the same creative freedom that allowed him to define the character for more than two decades.

With Marvel’s mutant era still taking shape, Jackman’s latest remarks leave the door wide open for additional appearances. Whether that includes Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, another Deadpool sequel, or another surprise project, it doesn’t sound like the actor is ready to retire Wolverine anytime soon.
