Warner Bros. is looking to bring Get Smart back to the big screen, with John Mulaney circling the lead role of Maxwell Smart.
The upcoming film is currently in the early stages of development, with Seth Grahame-Smith set to write the screenplay. Grahame-Smith’s credits include The Lego Batman Movie and Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Chuck Roven and Andrew Lazar are attached to produce.
Mulaney would take on the role of Agent 86, the confident but often hilariously incompetent secret agent originally played by Don Adams in the classic television series.
Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, Get Smart debuted in 1965 as a spoof of the increasingly popular spy genre. The series followed Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 as they worked for the secret government agency CONTROL in its ongoing battle against the criminal organization KAOS.

The series ran for five seasons and 138 episodes, earning seven Emmy Awards during its run.
Warner Bros. previously brought Get Smart to theaters in 2008 with Steve Carell starring as Maxwell Smart alongside Anne Hathaway as Agent 99. The film also starred Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin and Terence Stamp.
The 2008 film earned more than $230 million worldwide against an estimated $80 million production budget.
Mulaney has yet to officially sign on for the new film, and Warner Bros. has not announced a director, additional cast members, production date or release date.
If a deal comes together, however, Mulaney could become the latest actor to step into the shoes of Agent 86 as Warner Bros. looks to introduce Get Smart to a new generation.
