Masters of the Universe Debuts Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes as Early Reviews Praise He-Man’s Return

The first wave of reviews for Masters of the Universe has arrived, and the long-awaited live action reboot is off to a strong start with critics.

The film initially debuted at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a “Fresh” rating and generating positive buzz ahead of its June 5 theatrical release. Directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, the fantasy adventure appears to have won over many critics who were skeptical about another attempt to bring Eternia to the big screen.

Several reviewers highlighted the film’s balance of nostalgia and blockbuster spectacle.

Writing for the San Francisco Chronicle, one critic called the movie “the rousing fantasy adventure fans deserve,” praising its blend of classic Masters of the Universe mythology with modern filmmaking.

Meanwhile, Nagier Chambers of Big Gold Belt Media praised the adaptation, saying it was “tremendously entertaining” and a faithful take on the beloved franchise.

Jeffrey Lyles of Lyles’ Movie Files also praised the film’s crowd-pleasing approach, describing it as a fun popcorn blockbuster packed with action and visual effects.

Not every critic was convinced, however. Some reviews criticized the film’s lengthy runtime and uneven tone, with detractors arguing that the movie struggles to balance its campy roots with a more serious fantasy story.

Still, the overall reception has been stronger than many expected, especially for a franchise that has struggled to find success on the big screen since the 1987 Dolph Lundgren film.

At the time of writing, Masters of the Universe currently sits at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 85 critic reviews.
