A troubling new report claims Microsoft’s ongoing Xbox restructuring could put one of its biggest upcoming games in jeopardy, with Marvel’s Blade reportedly at risk of cancellation and developer Arkane Lyon facing a possible shutdown.
According to the report, Microsoft is “currently weighing closing at least five studios, including the developers behind Marvel’s Blade.” It also claims that “sources tell me Microsoft wants to cancel Blade as part of a wave of cost cuts and job losses that are planned for the company’s Xbox gaming division.”
Arkane Lyon, the acclaimed studio behind Dishonored and Deathloop, revealed Marvel’s Blade during The Game Awards 2023. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited a proper gameplay reveal, but the project was notably absent from this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, fueling speculation about its status.
The report also claims the game has encountered development setbacks. “The internal ship date for the game slipped to late 2027, and it’s also running over budget,” according to sources familiar with the project’s development.

While canceling Marvel’s Blade is reportedly one option on the table, Microsoft is also said to be exploring the possibility of selling Arkane Lyon rather than closing the studio outright. If a buyer can be found, the studio and the game could potentially survive, though the report notes that such negotiations could take months to complete.
The possibility of Arkane’s closure has sparked concern throughout the gaming community. The studio has built a reputation for critically acclaimed immersive sims, including Dishonored and Deathloop, and would mark another significant loss following Microsoft’s closure of Arkane Austin in 2024.
As of now, Microsoft has not officially commented on the report, and Marvel’s Blade has not been canceled. Until an official announcement is made, the future of both the game and Arkane Lyon remains uncertain.
