Mysterious Medicine wheels appearing on skin

Originally published 19th May 2011. Updated May 2026.

Two persons, unknown of each other, separated by thousand miles noticed on one morning these strange marks on their skin.
They had no idea how those get there.
Their common backgound is spirituality.
One had an ayahuasca ceremony the night before, the second had a spiritual emergency (diagnosed as psychosis) following it.

Please note, this posting is made in order to collect more cases and expand research rather than to convince people of a phenomenon.

Update March 2018: Recently two people sent me emails about similar phenomenon. One attached a photo. Please see below.

Update November 2023: More photos have come in

Update August 2024. A new photo came with the following message:

“I saw your wheel marking and I wanted to share that I also received one. Stayed on me for about a week. This is the second time this has appeared on me. The last one was about 15 years ago. I have been on a spiritual journey and have come to know Jesus as the messiah.”

Update April 2025. New photos came with the following message:

“Hello, I am writing from Türkiye. 14-15 years ago, a circular shape formed on the inside of my arm, I couldn’t quite make sense of it at the time, I didn’t photograph that first symbol. In June 2022, a similar shape formed again, and it happened while I was sitting at the kitchen table. I suddenly stood up and unknowingly put my finger on that shape and told my friend that something happened here. When I looked in the mirror, there was a formation similar to the previous shape. I photographed it first at that moment, and then again.”

Update May 2026. New photos came with the following message:

“I’ve seen your article after I’ve started to search for the sign that appeared on my skin this morning.
It’s a circular sign, and feels like a scar. I have cats but there is no way they could have scratch me so precisely.
What’s your research says. What’s this, please, and how even possible? I had a very “busy” night with a lot of dreams, though I cannot recall the specifics of them.”

2nd update May 2026. New photos and video came with the following message:

“Two days ago, a geometric symbol appeared on my left leg. It’s like a mark on my skin. I can assure you that I haven’t bumped it, stepped on anything, burned myself, or anything like that; it simply appeared on my leg out of nowhere. … What does it mean? Is it something bad? It reminds me of a solar cross, but I’m not sure. I’ve attached photos and videos I’ve taken..”

Additionally:

It’s at least curious that the symbol appeared during an ayahuasca ceremony. In my case, I just fell asleep, and the next day, apparently, it was already imprinted on my skin.

As for dermatologists…it’s laughable! How do they explain that this phenomenon occurs in different parts of the world and isn’t something medical to be treated? It’s a joke!

I have to tell you that something strange has happened to me. You know that here in Madrid, at this time of year, it’s already hot, and we have beautiful sunshine all day. Well, I felt like it needed to be exposed to the sun…and suddenly, my leg darkened. I got scared and quickly moved out of the sun. A few days later, I wanted to try again, and I stayed in the sun a little longer. To my surprise, it reacted to the sun, and the mark became much larger. Not only that, but from the knee down, I feel a tingling sensation (it’s like the feeling you get when your leg is numb and the numbness is fading). Now, I experience this tingling from time to time; something has happened to my leg. I’m attaching photos so you can see it.

It’s a shame because I can’t open the website, and I can’t access the photos you’ve published. I don’t know if the link is broken, but I can’t access the website on either my computer or my mobile phone.

You have my permission to publish it and to add the photo where the shading is visible. I hope it can help someone.

A related email exchange

“Hello E,
I first met you in Brazil… My curiosity (and, I must admit, skepticism) was piqued by a recent post of yours that ended up on Graham Hancock’s website, about marks on two people’s arms on the same morning.
How did you come across this phenomenon? Why do you trust it? I register my skepticism but am open to your evidence. Have the marks remained?
Best, K. W.”

My answer to him:

“Dear K,
Well, well. Artifact, but how? Hairdryer? Try it! I did. Contact allergy to some sort of a medal? Perhaps the red one. That one lasted for 6 days. What about the white one? It was scar-like and lasted 4 months. Then it disappeared without a trace. They denied having a medal nearby (A denial for what purpose? They did not know that I was going to post it years later). You can see, that the “technique” cannot be the same, and the two persons definitely did not have conscious agenda. Perhaps unconscious: “being the choosen one”. Isn’t this explanation intriguing on its own?

The ayahuasca case happened in 2008.
I examined the mark and saw the person being puzzled searching the Internet for answers.
I was suspicious about someone else making it.
However, the puzzle is yet open: how can it be made? Sucking the skin with a pipe? If he did: Qui prodest? Who is the benefactor? Having no clear explanation I burried the whole issue and forgot about it (but kept the photos).

Then last week a patient came to me (for the reason hearing about me as an open-minded psychiatrist) brought that picture with him and told me his story what happened 5 years ago. The two persons involved, did not know about the other, did not seem to have an “agenda”, a conscious goal to have it. Spiritual interest, spiritual goals, can be a common denominator. The closest thing is some Christian believers’ stigmata: producing Jesus’ wounds on themselves. However, those believers have a preconcept about what to come up with. These persons apparently did not.

Warmests,

E

Another related email exchange

“Dear Sir,
These wheels and cross patterns that appear on the skin are known to be caused by ring worm infestation. Anyone getting such markings should go to their doctor for treatment as soon as possible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermatophytosis. The connection to matters “spiritual” is zero. The only connection might be that infection is spread within a community of fellow believers who interpret the “signs” as a “mark of the beast” or a “stigmata”. Early Christians were known to believe that these markings were from their messiah. However modern science has proven that these patterns are caused by fungal infections of the skin. Easily treated with a washing using soap. Simply nothing to get worried about. However, despite what the medical community have to say, I notice that contact with ET or EBE or other “trans-dimensional beings” is often resulting in such various geometrical skin markings. My interpretation is that once again that it is nothing more than a fungal infection in the skin. Perhaps as a consequence of being touched by the alien beings. Within Catholic circles there was the famous case of Padre Pio in Italy who developed his famous “stigmata” on both hands. Their belief was and still is that these “stigmata” were paranormal in origin being equivalent to the scares of crucifixion experienced by their messiah. However it is more likely that Padre Pio simply had a skin disease.

A severe case of meningococcal meningitis in which the petechial rash progressed to gangrene and required amputation of all limbs. The patient, survived the disease and became a poster child for a meningitis vaccination campaign in New Zealand.

During 2005 I personally suffered a period of [shingles] Herpes Zoster. Which results in skin markings. One should always see a doctor so that these illnesses do not get to be something much more serious. If treated early the problems will be far less problematic.

Sincerely,
N.L.

My answer:

Dear Colleague,
I had skin disease in my mind like annular erythema, which can come up after tick bite and is a sign of spirocheta infection resulting in lyme disease. Dermatophytosis can also cause ring-like skin marks. However, those do not show a regular geometric pattern, far less these “spoked” wheel-like shapes (see illustrations). Please, send me one picture of dermatophytosis with this kind of regularity.

My dermatologists friends have no dermatological explanations (I came up with the idea of allergic dermatitis following the pattern of a pendant), they are mostly suspicious of fraud. Herpes zoster (shingles) presents with different skin marks (see picture).

Under hypnosis subjects can come up with strange skin marks as result of the suggestion.
I am inclined to suppose an autosuggestive mechanism. Spiritual interest (common in the above cases) may be a predisposing factor in such an etiology.

I am open to explanations, another reason of the posting.

Sincerely,
F.E.”

Hi,

…I would like to point out that these two medicine wheels are the exact opposite of each other. One is positive space and the other is negative space. In other words, what is imprinted on the person’s skin in the left-hand photo is the background of the same “medicine wheel” and what is imprinted on the right-hand photo is the positive space, or the lines (or foreground) of the same medicine wheel. At least, that is what artists call it…positive and negative space…just to distinguish between the two. Not intended as judgment…

L.W.

My response:

Dear L.,

Many thanks for your comment!
Yes, I have noticed, that they are some sort of negatives of each other.
Nonewithstanding, one has 16 spokes and the other 12. One has a rim on the outside.
One has lasted 6 days, the other lasted 4 months.
Therefore, if they are artifacts then they have to be made by different methods.
The persons are absolutely unknown to each other and I have not find yet a common “inspirative” source on the internet (this is not true after posting: some people may use it as template from now on).
What I have found thus far (Celtic wheel, Swiss pendants, etc.) are not as close to these, than they are to each other.
The only one who can make this up as a hoax is me.:)))
Kindest regards,

E.F.
