The Episode 3 title is “The Bear Is Infected.” That already tells you most of what you need to know.
In her CIA briefing, Oleksandra Balakin (Elizaveta Neretin) hands over a physical packet and states she personally runs a network that includes five sitting U.S. senators, at least one flipped through a honeypot.
Her framing, verbatim: “Russia’s a wolf pack. China is the tiger. And you? You are the bear. What kills the bear? Disease kills the bear. And they’ve been infecting you for many years.”
The compromised list runs from school superintendents (curriculum control) to low-level federal employees, FBI agents, military personnel, researchers, journalists, congressmen, and private-sector figures.
The Russian method she describes is straightforward: find the weakness, seduce, photograph, or blackmail, then own the asset. She points to strippers planted near military towns, sourced from Russia, China, Colombia, and Venezuela.
China’s version is slower and structural: long-term economic entanglement, information warfare, and polarization designed to make America tear itself apart from the inside.
To show how deep the infection already runs, Oleksandra correctly names Lioness team members in the room and cites their past operations, proof that foreign services know far more than the CIA assumed.
Earlier in the episode, Kaitlyn Meade’s husband Errol (Martin Donovan) makes the same case. He tells her China has zero interest in a conventional shooting war, references research tied to a Wuhan lab, and says he’s been personally targeted through shell companies, lawsuits, and contract exposure.
Everything else in Season 3 reads as a symptom. Joe extracts a Russian hybrid-warfare leader from the Donetsk front. Two SVR contractors carrying Belarusian passports show up at her Virginia door impersonating state police, and she kills them. The plan she engineers, a public announcement of a captured Russian agent meant to flush the domestic network, plays on television while she sits restrained and interrogated in the season’s flash-forward.
The Lioness team spent years hunting threats overseas.
Balakin’s point is that the more dangerous war is already running through the institutions and people they report to.
