Two of the stars of Memoirs of a Geisha have shared candid reactions to the film and the story behind it, offering a rare unscripted moment in an era of tightly managed press tours.
Zhang Ziyi spoke about her surprise at the film’s origins, marveling that its source material came from an American author. “I just couldn’t believe that American guy who wrote this such beautiful story about Geisha’s life,” she said. “How could he know?”
Michelle Yeoh, meanwhile, gave a blunt response when asked whether she thought the film was realistic. “I didn’t care,” she said.
