Herbal Profile/Information

Dandelion ~ Taraxacum officinale

Dandelion is one of my favorite medicinal plants. The entire dandelion plant may be used medicinally. Dig its roots in the spring and fall, and harvest leaves and fresh flowers during the spring and summer months. Dandelion contains vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. It also contains glycosides, terpenes, and flavonoids, and helps digestion with its bitter compounds by increasing bile production. Dandelion is considered to be a diuretic that relieves fluid retention, a laxative, anti-rheumatic, and a liver tonic.

Magickally, Dandelion flowers, leaves, and roots can be used in rituals or workings that address issues surrounding prosperity, justice, achieving understanding, cleansing and purification, healing, and rebirth.

The leaves are generally used in teas, while the roots are simmered for 20 to 30 minutes (known as a decoction). I like to strain the decoction and pour it over dandelion leaf and other herbs in a tea strainer to add additional nutrients to the tea instead of simply using boiling water. Dandelion can also be used in tinctures and poultices, or to make a lovely wine.
