Calendula ~ Calendula Officinalis

Calendula is a beautiful flower that has an incredible ability to heal. Plus, it tends to self-seed, so it comes back again in the Spring and Summer months, depending on where you live. It’s ruled by The Sun, and is used in magickal workings to increase wealth and success, illuminate the truth, and for protection, rebirth, and to express love.

Medicinally, Calendula’s flowers contain a variety of constituents, including carotenoids, resins, and saponins. It is considered a bitter, has sterols, flavonoids, and essential oils. Calendula can be used as an astringent, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and vulnerary. I use Calendula in teas, oils, skin creams, and salves, and in a martial arts bruise oil I make. It’s helpful externally for wounds, external bleeding, bruising, strains, and burns. Internally, calendula is used to support digestive issues, combat infections, and boost the immune system. DO NOT use calendula during pregnancy because it may stimulate uterine contractions and result in miscarriage.

Note: It’s best to dry the calendula blossoms (including the green sticky bract portion of the flower) before infusing them into oils (my preference is almond oil) to avoid rancidity, microbial growth, or potential botulism from developing. I prefer using the orange colored blossoms, although the yellow and white blossoms can be used as well.
