New Hydrogen-Powered BRT System Launched in Porto, Portugal

Metro do Porto has officially launched its all-new hydrogen-powered Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, MetroBus, with the CAETANO H2. CityGold.

The new, 18-metre-long articulated buses have been designed by CaetanoBus, and integrate Toyota Fuel Cell technology.

The launch of the system marks the launch of the world’s first bus OEM-led hydrogen BRT consortium

Specifically designed for high-capacity urban corridors, the hydrogen fuel cell electric buses are capable of providing 450kms of real-autonomy with a single refuelling in less than 20 minutes, and feature doors on both sides – making them fully adaptable to dedicated BRT infrastructure, centre-lane platforms or conventional side-lane stations.

The initiation of MetroBus operation marks a global first as the project becomes the world’s first bus OEM-led hydrogen BRT consortium, with CaetanoBus acting as prime contractor delivering both the fleet and a fully integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem.
