A24 has released the official trailer for The Debut, the upcoming comedy drama written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg.
The film stars Julianne Moore as Mona Friedman, a shy and unassuming housewife who lands a small role in a local community theater production. What begins as a seemingly minor opportunity quickly turns into something much bigger as Mona becomes increasingly consumed by her performance and determined to protect the artistic integrity of her role.
Paul Giamatti stars as the production’s domineering director, with Halle Bailey and Jesse Eisenberg also among the film’s principal cast.
The ensemble also includes Havana Rose Liu, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Eldar Isgandarov, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy and Bernadette Peters.
The Debut marks Eisenberg’s latest project behind the camera following A Real Pain.
Plot Summary
When Mona Friedman is cast in a bit part at a small community theater, the formerly reserved housewife transforms into an intensely committed method actor. Her growing obsession with the role eventually puts her at odds with the production’s demanding director as she becomes willing to do nearly anything to defend her character and the performance she has created.
The Debut arrives in theaters on December 11, 2026.
