Future of Metaphysics: Trends and Projections
Metaphysics is the science of philosophy that examines what truly matters, such as existence, reality, and being. Stuff you do not want to know. However, the point (and it is a critical point) is that metaphysics is not held prisoner in the ivory tower of antique thoughts. It is changing and dynamic. Metaphysics is like a river that has turned abruptly, or a tree that has grown branches out of its leaves.
Where to Begin?
Let us take a step back before we start making predictions. How in the world did we find ourselves here? Thousands of years have passed since metaphysics was the domain of deep thinking. Metaphysics has been the cradle of some of the most delicate notions of humanity, the idealism of Plato and the cogito of Descartes. People have always asked themselves, “What is reality? “Are we just particles, a dance of the universe, or is there something more?”
But this is the weird part. Metaphysics has never really disappeared, even as science acquires more and more fancy playthings, such as microchips and Ai. However, no matter how hard we strive, humans cannot avoid the timeless appeal of the question of ‘Why?’ It will not pass away, and the future is rushing toward us faster and faster.
Trend 1: Digitization of Metaphysics
Imagine. You are wearing a VR headset (a cool one, of course). Welcome to a virtual reality where you can experiment with philosophical claims. Have you ever imagined what infinity would look like? Or a parallel world simulation? It is not that difficult.
A gigantic metaphysical wave is coming. It’s technology. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are now being used as thought experiments, not just games and concerts, in digital worlds. What would happen if metaphysical conversations were not reserved in books or classrooms but in places where philosophical thought was physically immersive?
But wait. Does that not trouble us? What would reality be like, given that our brains can generate entirely new worlds in real time in a virtual reality? Are we making reality? Or… is reality something that exists and is being created by something greater than we can imagine?
Trend 2: The Strength of AI Philosophers
The concept of AI philosophers raises a lot of interesting questions. The most intriguing question is whether (and when) there will be AI philosophers.
AI already writes poetry, heats our homes, and occasionally orders groceries before we know we are running out of milk. But can AI do something as human and abstract as metaphysics? There are many signs that the answer is yes. Suppose there is an AI that is very intelligent and begins to think independently. (Creepy? Maybe. Interesting? Sure.) The AIs of the future may even delve into philosophy and test our most basic understanding of consciousness and what constitutes reality. When AI poses the question, “Am I real?” What does it mean about intelligence and life? Does a self-conscious machine make it less innate than a person who dreams of unicorns?
And this is the elephant in the room. Does the most advanced human art outshine the complexity of life? Perhaps, perhaps not. However, this is evident: AI will jump over railings and tip things over, just like cats tip over glasses.
Trend 3: Metaphysics of the Environment
What is the metaphysical status of a forest? Or of a wave? Or of the air you breathe? These are not poetic fancies. They are the foundations of new thinking that is developing as environmental metaphysics. It is like having a pair of glasses that magnify the spirit of the natural world.
With climate change increasingly becoming an unavoidable reality in people’s lives, metaphysical views are looking beyond it. What is nature? As argued by philosophers, nature is a mind in itself and all other minds. Is it a comprehensive spirit? And is the universe a living thing with parts we cannot see? This is logical. You are bound to wonder when you observe that huge ecosystem that follows its logic.
Consider it like this. Are we also entangled in the fabric of the Earth, given that everything is entangled at all scales?
Trend 4: Mysticism of the Year of the Masses
Metaphysics, after all, used to be a discipline in which professional philosophers wrote in a language that nobody could comprehend. No more, my friend. Popular philosophy is the fashion. And here is what I mean: popular philosophy is a culture that rewrites old, fragile idioms on glossy discs.
Watch a film such as The Matrix, and you might believe you are in a simulation. These films are not merely entertainments; they are invitations to consider some of the world’s most significant metaphysical questions. On TikTok (yes, TikTok!), creators are also obsessed with parallel universes and the nature of reality.
This is the curious point: popular metaphysics makes these heavy, thought-provoking subjects popular. You do not have to have a Ph.D. to contribute to the discussion. Curiosity is all you need. It only takes something other than you, something different than what you are right now, and a good internet connection. Watching your favorite TV show while eating popcorn is a plunge into the pursuit of existence. The secret is multitasking.
Trend 5: The Unification of Philosophy and Physics
Science and philosophy had been united. The modern day physics is getting stranger. It is even stranger than even a professional physicist would have admitted in the past, to exist. Quantum entanglement and the multiverse are some of the concepts that push us further to what we think is true. When scientists talk about particles existing in two or more places at the same time it starts to sound as though they are talking nonsense! But, it’s not.
Suppose we have a holographic world. And consider this. It is as though one has reused the old, worn-out philosophical and scientific ideas to create a new, over-simplistic theory of physics.. What of space, time and the origin of time, considering that the universe is a hologram?
Future Projections
Ah, and now the good part. What will be the future of metaphysics? Will we all be in our cars and debating fiercely on what life means? Or will we be Netflix-y and lost in metaphysics? Let us make some wild guesses and bind them with a ribbon of hope.
Metaphysics in Education
It will not be surprising when classrooms of the future resemble playgrounds. Consider a school teaching children what to think and how to face big questions, even pop quizzes.
The Revival of Mysticism
The renewed attention to metaphysics and its lost occult dimensions is likely a result of the current interest in mindfulness and spirituality. The ancient civilizations might have had something we have long since forgotten.
The Unified Theory of Reality
A Unified Theory of Reality is unlikely. The universe is inherently secretive, and perhaps metaphysics and science won’t ever combine into one system of knowledge.
Conclusion
All right, that is enough. Nobody knows what metaphysics will do tomorrow. Metaphysics is something that leaves you with questions, and then more questions, and then more questions. It is a rabbit hole, and it is curious. Metaphysics will never give you complete answers. Instead, it gives you a flashlight and says, It is very dark. See what you can find.
Being a young, ambitious thinker, a curious teenager, or a person who wonders what the meaning of life is, one thing is definite: the questions will become louder. And that is the way of the world.
